About Damn Small Linux and TARTUGA-DSL (Debian Linux virtual environment)
TARTUGA-D(amn)S(mall)L(inux) are very small size (75 MB ... 100 MB // 350 MB with OpenOffice) Live CD Linux distributions. Despite the base system is minuscule it strives to have a functional and easy to use desktop, TARTUGA-DSL has a nearly complete desktop, including => Sound, video: XMMS (MP3, and MPEG, optional: Xine for video and bittorrent interface), graphics apps (Xzgv, Xpaint, X Windows Snapshot etc.)a multi account (axv) FTP client, SSh, Telnnet, remote X-desktop, 3-4 web browsers: 1-> Dillo, 2-> Firefox and ->Lynx (for console !)-> Opera TM (including chat and email ) SIAG spreadsheet with manual, Sylpheed for multi account email, installed spellcheck ( TED: US English, German, Italian, French / others: US-English: ), Xkeycaps (keyboard layouter), CDW (CD burn tool), a nearly complete PERL programming environment, a PERL based database, calendar, J-Pilot (organizer + PALM software), word-processors (TED multilingual En, Ge, Fr, It with English and German manuals , optional: OpenOffice, multilingual (En, Ge, It, Fr) with english or german interface), 4 editors (Nedit, Beaver, Vim, Nano), HTML editor (Bluefish), HTML converter (TED), Xpdf, (MS.doc-)Wordviewer and PS/PDF-converter, EmelFM and MC (3 file managers, also Root-fm), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviewer, SAMBA and SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client and server, terminalserver, PPP, PPPoE, a web server, calculator, Fluxbox and JWM: 2 window managers (2 different GUI) , system monitoring apps, USB support, and PCMCIA / WLAN support, GTK-2_Update (optional), Parted and QTparted (hd partition tools) etc. Now enabled to mount cloop file embedded extensions (local / download) and new Unionfilesystem. System: Default shell: bash (Busybox). Optional: GNU-utils. Default system and apps language: US-English. Filesystem: hacked (modular structured) UN(ion)-FS. If you like TARTUGA-DSL you can install it as 'frugal' installation or just copy it e.g. on your USB pendrive, CompactFlash, Zip etc.or on your hard drive. In the same way you can save your configuration and documents indipendently of location of system cloop (Knoppix) and also indipendently of no static or optional apps. Because all the applications are small and light it makes a very good choice for older or low cost hardware. TARTUGA-DSL distributions are low level hacked (miniroot, kernel, other modular filesystem etc. ) and German (Switzerland, Austria, Germany) and Italian localized live CD versions of genuine DSLinux live CD distribution using ( hacked) Knoppix and DSL technology.
